0:02I'm meeting to order.

0:04Okay, so it's cool.

0:09I will start with the territorial acknowledgement.

0:15So as we gather, let us take time to reflect on our privilege to live and work in Guelph, a city built over rich Indigenous histories.

0:23We are guests here and we should reflect upon the responsibility to care for this land, the people who live here today and the generations to come.

0:31If our actions today can move us towards reconciliation, we should take pause and make those decisions with intention and gratitude.

0:38This place we call Guelph has served as traditional lands and a place for refuge for many peoples over time, but more specifically, the Ida Wanderang and the Haudenosaunee.

0:51This land is held as tree landings and territory with Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

0:58Guelph lies directly adjacent to the Haudenosaunee tract and is part of a long established traditional hunting ground for the six nations of the Grand River.

1:06Any First Nations and UNMAT peoples who have come from across Turtle Island call Guelph home today.

1:13Moving on to 1.3, a verbal of the minutes from December 11th.

1:26Like I said, I will just ask for some energy.

1:31I will sign it.

1:34I will.

1:44Okay.

1:45Good.

1:48Items for discussion. So 2.1.

1:52So I guess we'll move on to sort of the Corgite East subdivision park naming.

1:58So, a few weeks ago, Rory and I had the opportunity to speak with

2:06here from Mississauga.

2:11And so we talked about some options for naming a park. We had to propose sort of Turtle Park.

2:19And some of the recommendations that he made were perhaps maybe like a phrase.

2:26Okay.

2:27For the park rather than just Turtle.

2:32And then what we would do is we would provide sort of those suggestions to him and he would have someone on his staff translate it for us and then we could determine if it's pronounceable and or makes the most sense.

2:49So then I know Rory had also sent some details about the EIR about that.

2:56Part of the neighborhood and stuff.

3:00So I would just say that in reading through that EIR, the word turtle literally shows up.

3:07Once.

3:09And I think it's only to do with the northern map turtle.

3:18So I'm not convinced that turtle is the most appropriate name for the park.

3:26Some of the things that I just jotted down in reading the EIR were sort of towards Greek.

3:33That seemed to be a recurring theme throughout the report.

3:39That's because the words Greek is sort of the main.

3:42The one land there.

3:45Or if we wanted to go with like turtle Greek.

3:49Or if we do stick sort of with an indigenous idea.

3:57And like Rory and I were sort of saying.

4:00Or the phrase when you're speaking with Darren like so it's the way that it's landed the park is situated it's between.

4:10There's sort of.

4:12Both of map you can sort of see there's like the wooded area over here and the park is kind of in the middle and there's a head row that sort of links those two.

4:20And it's like the wooded areas.

4:23Any open for.

4:26Thoughts.

4:30I feel like I will admit I don't have any other thoughts on this at the moment I was trying to understand because I thought it was still going to be a word for the phrase thing now I see they want to phrase that.

4:42I think I agree that what you're saying to be talked about quite a bit at the last meeting was that turtle.

4:54Was recommended by a number of people because they thought turtles were prevalent there but it seems like it's not.

4:59We get a biggest thing.

5:01One more question on that.

5:03Did we ever find out what the theme of the actual installation is going to be like do they have anything from.

5:10Committee.

5:11The parks department is is working on the design.

5:18I believe they're going to the public with some concepts.

5:24Very very soon.

5:28I think we're going to be working with Darren from the credit of Mississauga's he didn't.

5:36Request that the park design.

5:40You know, he wasn't requiring that the park design had anything to do with the naming of the park if it was to be an indigenous name.

5:49It was very open to obviously being part of that process but didn't require that you know if we're going to if you were going to name it turtle park.

6:00Using an indigenous name that they didn't actually have to have the themes throughout.

6:05He was just he just was very open to the idea of naming the park after an indigenous name if we found one or phrase that we found one that suited the area and didn't commit us to anything else.

6:24So we're not having to link or be tied to the actual.

6:29Yes.

6:30Yeah, and just to expand on a little bit of what we were saying in our meeting with Darren.

6:35He only brought up the idea of phrase because.

6:39The indigenous language from what I can gather.

6:43You know, there's a one word can mean a number of things or a number of ideas so.

6:50You know, saying turtle could be interpreted in many different ways in from an indigenous side. So if you were to put together a phrase it might be able to help their interpreter really sort of focus in on exactly what we were looking for.

7:05And sometimes one word in an indigenous means a whole phrase in English right so the lands between can be one word in indigenous so sometimes he said phrases in English that are then translated are better.

7:23Then just us coming back to him with one word in English because it there might not be a single word in the indigenous language that translates so.

7:35That's why he thought maybe using a phrase would be better and I think that's one of the pages I referred you to.

7:43Which noted a number of other parks in Canada named after indigenous words. Most of them were phrases right they were translated into English as phrases or vice versa so was.

7:56It might be a better way for us if that's the way you guys want to proceed then it might be better for us to think of.

8:04A phrase that recognizes or best relates to the to this park or the land around it.

8:13On that note then I just one other thought is.

8:19I think if we just picked one phrase and gave it to them I feel like that's in my life.

8:23Yeah, that might be a little bit limiting to and maybe we're not thinking of the right way to so maybe we like give them a few different ideas and then.

8:30I can sort of mention that like two or three that you think maybe work and then.

8:37See what they come back as translated to determine if it's like.

8:42Like yeah like this or like that they can build on like if we said like for example because we were originally coming with the turtle idea of some place of the turtles or like turtle park or something for Gary and then they kind of knew like pick some words around that.

8:57And then the other thing that you mentioned torrents, which I don't think torrents I think torrents is a.

9:04If it was torrents creek then I think it would just be.

9:08I'm sorry.

9:09Right, right. If you wanted to go with like the wetland idea or the creek idea could be like you give them a few different words and say like.

9:16With something like this work like.

9:19Place like what land place or wherever hard get the.

9:23Hard in between the wetlands or yeah and when you look at the other indigenous names at least for Ontario like.

9:30I want them are very it's not a I don't think it's a phrase that you would say in English first so like being obviously like.

9:37A lot of it.

9:38The different when you're or come to that.

9:41Through.

9:42Yeah, like a good experience something that like right.

9:46Which is very cool and like river and long ties like these are that phrase that we're going to get them in English because we would never be able to see it.

9:53Yes, that's right. Exactly Megan yet so yet.

9:58And that's where the interpreter can help.

10:02If there's an idea that we want to that you guys want to explore.

10:08Then the interpreter can help.

10:10Go back and forwards right.

10:13This is what it means in an indigenous language.

10:17This is what it would translate in English does that make sense in English as well right like this.

10:22Like you said like it's some of them are quite.

10:25Nice in English as well.

10:28Yeah, they sound really good.

10:30I mean I think face on my.

10:34I didn't read the entire EIR but they know.

10:37I mean, you know, like what we've been talking about the previous meeting and and the wetland thing, which is, I guess, quite prominent.

10:44Maybe we could suggest something around turtles still to leave it out there and then something around wetland and then.

10:50On racing.

10:54Oh, sorry. Yes, please don't just feel like you're here.

10:58Okay, just jump in.

11:00Thank you.

11:02Yeah, I just wanted to offer that there might be some language even in the nominations that that were submitted originally and not necessarily the actual naming nomination but the way in which they were describing or expressing relationship to to the site.

11:22I think could give us some some language that is true to our community and you know the nominations themselves, but also phrases right.

11:31I think to, you know, oftentimes in my experience and then just reviewing the material that Rory sent and then also hearing the conversation so far this evening.

11:42I think it's like one approach is to sort of look at the natural landscape and to try and find words that describe the landscape.

11:52You might also think about the intention around how it will be used as a park so it could also be a phrase that, you know, is inspired by, you know, what kind of experience we're hoping to create for community in this in this space.

12:09So I think all the things that you've shared already are really relevant and important.

12:15But I also think, you know, I am not a fluent by any I'm not even like, I don't have basic understanding of indigenous languages.

12:27But my experience has led me to believe that oftentimes those translation pieces are like expressive.

12:35So they're not so much descriptive of a place but expressive of its sort of energy or experience or the intention that we want to create in that space so just to kind of broaden out a little bit.

12:48I don't know if that complicates things from your end or makes it a little bit easier to grasp, but I think we could lean it like as I say lean into some of the language that was in those nominations that are what got people excited about making a name suggestion.

13:04And then couple that with you sort of our intention in terms of what kind of experience folks will have when they visit that space so it could be, you know, you know, you know something action based like, you know, play playing, playing along the river side or the creek side, you know, like it could could also be that kind of energy action based wording.

13:34Mm hmm.

13:35I like the idea of like meeting place like it's a

13:40Like a gathering.

13:41Yeah, gathering place.

13:45I also don't want to.

13:48I don't want to get hung up on like this is the way we need to go also like I think we should be open to if this isn't the right for.

14:01To have an identity to this name that I don't think we should be trying to force something if it's not.

14:07If we're not feeling it basically.

14:10I understand that.

14:12We're focusing more on objects or like actions as opposed to like any people, any actual people's names or actual entities with an indigenous background.

14:25Like someone for example suggested the government general.

14:29Oh, for the other part, right.

14:32Or.

14:34Is that sort of where our conversations.

14:39Yeah.

14:41That's much a person is.

14:45Before I came here, I had, I'm just considering the city has a like an acknowledgement.

14:53Every time.

14:55And there's two, there's two groups referred to with their the.

14:59Which show me Wednesday and when the hot shot, he does something. I don't want to.

15:04Yeah, I don't want to get.

15:05So I don't know if that's something we would want to look at simply because that's part of our.

15:11Because the acknowledgement part of the history year.

15:14So the translation would be in.

15:18I can't remember exactly what he said.

15:22So that I don't wonder on no one does not exist.

15:27And so Darren is basically saying like that language is.

15:32Gone.

15:34And so the.

15:36This is August 1st of credit.

15:42Chip way.

15:44Yes, I think you're right.

15:46So.

15:50Because the 12.

15:52He said that the best idea would be to sort of go back and forth between.

15:56This is August with a credit and.

16:00And then the next time if we're going to name another part.

16:04With.

16:05Indigenous language, then we would.

16:08That's right.

16:10Flip it.

16:11And.

16:12And.

16:14I forget.

16:19And we would go to like the 6th, 6th nations folks and have them.

16:23To a translation.

16:25Yeah.

16:27Yeah.

16:31Yeah.

16:32So I could offer some clarity to.

16:35So a gateway is an Anishinaabe Mohan language that is.

16:39Spoken by many Mississaugas.

16:43And then of course the Anishinaabe nation is much larger than just the Mississauga.

16:47So there's many, many, many other languages that are under the umbrella of.

16:51Anishinaabe Mohan.

16:53But locally, because the Mississaugas are the treaty holder and.

16:58Terror like this is their traditional territory.

17:01I think that's why, you know, we're working with Darren and others.

17:06In the Mississauga's to sort of have these understandings and collaborations.

17:11I think we'll get into this discussion a little bit when we talk about the naming of the other park,

17:16because there were some suggestions of Indigenous names as well.

17:20And within the 6th nations, of course, there are 6 nations and so 6 languages spoken.

17:28Under the umbrella of 6 nations.

17:30Not all of those languages are spoken by many people.

17:34So some are lesser well, lesser practiced than others.

17:38Like Mohawk is very strong language.

17:40I would suggest that Cayuga isn't is like very, very few native speakers have Cayuga today.

17:47It's being revitalized, but there are a few people who could possibly advise on sort of naming and Cayuga, for example.

17:54But yeah, there's lots of ways to go forward.

17:57And I also know Darren and he's an amazing person to work with and has informed so much of the work that we do in the museum.

18:04Through the Mississauga's lens, and I think his council is amazing in this practice.

18:10Yeah, just as a way to kind of broaden out a little bit of that language context if you haven't encountered this kind of exercise in other spaces before.

18:20So I think the other thing to think about too is that this is new naming, right?

18:26It's not a quote unquote sort of traditional or ancestral indigenous name that we're gifting to the park, right?

18:34It's a new relationship, a new dialogue, a new sort of contemporary way that we're understanding and interpreting the site that acknowledges that long indigenous history.

18:45But still the naming is new.

18:47So it's a truly a collaborative process that is very much about today, our relationships today, and sort of that path that we're on toward reconciliation.

18:58So I think we can also maybe that will lift some burden of responsibility around how we might put words together to really express the site.

19:10And I think, you know, again, I haven't done this. I haven't gone back and looked at the nominations from for this park.

19:17But, you know, most assuredly, there's some language in there that our community has already shared that might actually be really inspiring to find a name that could be translated in a jibway.

19:33And so are we good to pause that?

19:42Yeah, well, as a chair, Liam, you can you can sort of give some direction as to how you would like to proceed with that.

19:52If you feel like you would like to have some time, just a committee to burn it a little bit and yeah, and we'll do in the meantime, like maybe I want to I think I want to go to the site look at it again and like think about it too.

20:09Is there anything there visually because I'm just looking at a map and it's hard to tell. Yeah.

20:14Yeah.

20:15Or if you so I have it on Google, like, like, but it's nice to like stand there to see. Yeah, it's an interesting park for sure.

20:24Yeah, it's very, it's very part of the community and links, obviously, to larger wetlands and woodlots.

20:34So it does have, you know, you can it's not, you could think of it just not as a park, but the linkages to right. So yeah, it going to the park and walking up and down that gives you some inspiration and I would definitely encourage that.

20:48But again, so if you if you would like to take this away and have a further think about it.

20:56So we can you can obviously make that that motion to do that.

21:03Just trying to think of timing in terms of when we can reconvene.

21:13And or if you'd like to be able to bring forward some names or phrases.

21:21And amongst ourselves and then bring something to this back this committee.

21:26We can we can talk about how that would work. But if you for now you feel like you can't make a decision because you've got some new information and you want to have some further thing for the think about it. Let's do that.

21:37Yeah, new member.

21:42Yeah.

21:45I don't know if you got it to you like the previous set previous route.

21:48Yeah, to go back and look at what other comments were in around them.

21:54Yeah, I think I might have sent them to you David, but only a couple days ago just for your FYI so that you understood the discussion that was going on, but I'm more than happy to send those to you so that you can have a look at through those and

22:07Yeah, for sure.

22:13Okay, so for it and maybe I don't know if it's a power or not, but like if we could make like a Google Doc or something and just like literally type ideas and like a bow down, go kind of that kind of idea.

22:31Yeah, when you and I can talk about how we, you guys maybe work in the background share. And then obviously when you come to the next committee meeting, you have something prepared and then you feel like you're in a position that you can actually have a more

22:44I'm more fulsome discussion check and instead of just coming in blind and with some ideas and trying to bounce them off someone. Okay, definitely try to set that up for you.

22:57I know it's a very difficult one but I think there's obviously some interest from the group that maybe try to explore something that works before we say no so I feel like I think that someone brought up the idea of do we just

23:14I feel like with the fact that all I think they spent July the last email that just came out a few hours ago that was happening. Are we still here in Philadelphia or no.

23:27You're allowed to be here as long as I need you to.

23:31So the dissolving of the naming committee as it is today is has will occur, but I've, I've got confirmation from clerks that I can continue to work with you guys on outstanding items.

23:44So there's no new parts coming to us though. That's correct except for the Beaumont one that I'm talking about but yeah, unless something changes with the herd we go through the moment discussion and we're going to do next but we're not going to get any more opportunities to do this and then maybe

23:58would happen in the future but I think we talked a lot of them.

24:02Trying to move this forward while we because there hasn't been any point in that which is the ball.

24:09And it didn't take as long as we thought it was going to take.

24:12And so we're not ready to go.

24:15Right. Yeah, Darren's Darren's been great to work with right with he's been very open and honest with us and hasn't committed us to doing anything that was would be laborious and and has been very open to the idea of us bouncing ideas off of him and

24:30and yeah and felt like he would only maybe just need to go to a couple of the members to get some confirmation and then come back to us he didn't have to go all the way up the chain so it's not.

24:41I'm happy that we're even considering this. It's great.

24:46So yeah, if you want to defer that's great and then maybe we can talk further about when the next.

24:52At the end we can talk about other things to talk about and figure out when we can meet again.

24:59Moving on to point to so one oh six will want to be part of.

25:10I don't know if either of you want to start the discussion if you have thoughts or if there's certain ones that stand out more than others.

25:21Sorry, we are jumping on the list of it because we will defer to one item.

25:27Yes, the next meeting will determine right.

25:30But we still need to have a mover.

25:33Yeah, sure. Yeah, so I will move it.

25:36Yeah, you will move it. Thank you.

25:39Secondary vote in favor of the reduction and or.

25:45Do you want me to rhyme through do you want me to just to read them and.

26:08I guess I should say like.

26:11Good fit not good fit.

26:14Why don't you just try to tape play. Why don't you just pay table the ones that you think are good.

26:20Yeah, I will table.

26:24I will table one that I think is good.

26:27And it will table one that.

26:29I would propose if we don't think the other one is decent.

26:36Basically, I'm open to.

26:38One of the nominators mentioned that.

26:44Oh, it is named after Margaret.

26:49And so it took it to the book or the document that they said from the library.

26:57Sort of confirming that.

26:59So it is the doctor Margaret Beaumont. She was a land to corner.

27:06Area.

27:08And so I think we could.

27:11I know there's been we've been trying to shift away from Navy things after.

27:18And like having some diversity and stuff. So I think for whatever year that was.

27:24It was.

27:25Aint in 1929. So to have a woman that is owning land.

27:30At that time.

27:34It's kind of.

27:35Just a highly that I guess.

27:39And then the only other suggestion I would have.

27:42Would be.

27:44Related to Rockies.

27:46Hot dog place around the corner.

27:50So like Rocco.

27:51Contini.

27:53And just how that Rocky is hot dog place has sort of been a.

27:58Establishment in that neighborhood for a long time.

28:01But otherwise.

28:05I didn't do find any other ones that sort of.

28:09I think that's a good thing.

28:11I think that's a good thing.

28:13I think that's a good thing.

28:15So.

28:16Kind of a.

28:17Weird.

28:19Like it.

28:20The way that it's situated.

28:24Sort of a test for you.

28:25All back in the stuff.

28:26Yeah.

28:27Next.

28:28I also had fallen heart on my list.

28:31And actually Sloan Hill Park.

28:33And for the two reasons that are pretty obvious.

28:35But like those are the streets nearby.

28:37And they're both.

28:38I think they're both beautiful street.

28:40Yeah.

28:41But I think that's a good point.

28:43I think that a woman was the.

28:45Lin owner, though not.

28:46Potentially.

28:47Otherwise.

28:48Civic.

28:49Relevance.

28:50Reserved list.

28:51But.

28:52Setting those two aside for a second, I think the rest.

28:55A lot of the other names.

28:56There was.

28:57Money that didn't have a lot of.

28:58Civic history or a relationship to.

29:00There was an indigenous.

29:01Name.

29:02By the river.

29:03But as you've just commented.

29:04I.

29:05Also agree that it's not.

29:06Exactly.

29:07By the river.

29:08I don't know if you can see the river from that park either.

29:11Like it's kind of behind some buildings and stuff.

29:13So, and someone else that said,

29:16Pondview, I don't know if you can see the ponds.

29:19Well, in Pondview is the name of the street too.

29:23Yeah, but there's,

29:25like there's a street called Pondview,

29:29right, it's recent or something like that.

29:31So it could be confusing.

29:33Yes.

29:34There was also someone that suggested Yorkshire,

29:36which is all over the name of,

29:38something else strange.

29:40Yeah.

29:40Yeah, for sure.

29:43And then there was a number of people's names,

29:47including Queen Elizabeth,

29:48and none of them were already on the reserve name list

29:52that existed.

29:53I don't know if that can update it since the last time

29:55we got it, the last person I was at, I think it was 20,

30:00but none of them overlap.

30:01So that was one check I did.

30:04And like we could,

30:08we could talk through them if anyone else was,

30:10adding them are specifically relevant to that area

30:12where she was important to Gwalt and I guess,

30:16but I didn't get that impression

30:18or reading through those.

30:21And then the Rocky Contact place is an interesting idea

30:23that I'm thinking through.

30:27What is his name again?

30:28Rocky.

30:28It's like,

30:30So, Robno.

30:32Robno.

30:33Convin.

30:34Being that priority.

30:35Yeah, that's it.

30:37Well, yeah.

30:38If when the two of them, Elizabeth's pretty good,

30:4116, or there's an article in Gwalt today from,

30:45about six years ago.

30:54I think it's a long one.

30:59This long one was nice because they talked about

31:02the hill part of it and using it as like a play area.

31:05So this commit,

31:07I'll release it and bring it like that

31:10because keep that up and I stop talking about it.

31:14The tobogganing hill.

31:18It sounds like committee's leaning towards Sloan Hill.

31:27Is that right?

31:29We don't have two on Sloan or Beaumont.

31:32Yeah, two on Beaumont, two on Sloan Hill.

31:35Oh, I was just gonna say,

31:38I did look up Margaret Beaumont in the Museums Archives

31:42and I couldn't really learn anything about them.

31:46And I didn't have time to do deeper research,

31:49but did you say that you have found a resource

31:52that gave us some more information about Margaret Beaumont?

31:55Just in the,

31:58it was a Guelph origin of street names, Ross W. Irwin.

32:04Okay.

32:05It was referenced in the, like in the proposal itself.

32:10And you were able to find that?

32:13So it basically, it's just a list of every street coming

32:16and it just says Beaumont Crescent,

32:18Margaret Beaumont landowner.

32:24Yeah, I mean, I think when,

32:25if for example, committee decides to go with Margaret Beaumont,

32:30we're going to,

32:32our committee is going to be involved in sort of some,

32:35some research and wording around,

32:37why that namesake.

32:40And it would be great at this stage to task ourselves

32:44with some of that research, I think,

32:47regardless of which direction we go in.

32:49I completely see the interest in upholding,

32:55you know, a historical female figure, that's great.

32:59It would be a good idea to understand her story

33:03if we, if it's available to us before we commit

33:07to that naming, because a lot of time has passed

33:10and I think it's important.

33:14Anytime we up, we name a place after a person,

33:19people are complex beings

33:23and they're involved in lots of different things.

33:24So I don't know anything about Margaret Beaumont,

33:27but I just, you know, and it's interesting.

33:30I think that she was a quote unquote landowner,

33:33but there's more story there.

33:35And I think we should try to understand that

33:37as well as part of the process.

33:41I will just say I'm not a voting member,

33:43but I would say I was taken by the charming

33:48recommendation for Sloan Hill.

33:50I was really charmed by how they wrote their nomination

33:55and a big fan of the band Sloan.

34:00I think that, you know, they're from Halifax.

34:04They're not, you know, of Guelph origin,

34:07but I thought, you know, like this person obviously

34:09is like feeling the nostalgia of that relationship as well.

34:13So I just don't know how much of that story,

34:16if we go with Sloan Hill, how much of that story lives

34:18in the storytelling of the name of the place,

34:23we can think about that.

34:25And I'm not strongly opposed or for that.

34:28I just wanted to denote that it is,

34:33it's an interesting thing that is not very,

34:35you know, there's a story about, you know,

34:37Sloan being in Guelph, but I wonder about just question

34:40whether that's a chapter in the narrative we share

34:45through this committee.

34:46So yeah, those are the thoughts I had.

34:50I have a question on your comments on the Beaumont.

34:53So the submissions that came in were Beaumont Park.

34:58And if we went with like, if we wanted to stick with naming

35:02it after the street, which I know happens a lot of times,

35:04like Beaumont Street Park, it's not any more thought into it.

35:07Like we wouldn't necessarily have to name it

35:09Margaret Beaumont Park.

35:11Is that still a little bit of an option, right?

35:15Or do you think because we know we found out

35:17that the street's named after someone,

35:18we now have to go back and read out

35:20that person before we keep the street name on them for it?

35:27If you're posing that question to me,

35:29I would say that we do have a due diligence

35:31to try and understand Margaret Beaumont's story.

35:34The nominee, you know, I think you can call it Beaumont

35:37without Margaret Beaumont,

35:39but the one of the nominations was,

35:42you know, pitching that framework.

35:45And that's what I heard also at committee

35:47just now, the interest around upholding,

35:52you know, like recognizing a historically significant person

35:56who presumably was significant in being the namesake

36:01for the street, right?

36:03So that kind of carry, you know,

36:06we don't cease to have a responsibility

36:08to that historical narrative today

36:11if we're gonna carry that forward,

36:12but it could be as simple as Beaumont

36:16named for the street Beaumont.

36:18And we may not have a lot more information available

36:22about Margaret.

36:23Yeah.

36:24Yeah, but I don't think we've done

36:26exhaustive research either, so I'm hopeful that,

36:29you know, we can learn that.

36:32Just one more thought slash comment would be,

36:36eventually when it was named Beaumont Street originally,

36:39it was just because her land was the closest thing there,

36:41right?

36:42And in other words, a street behind me that was just named

36:43because it went through their farmland,

36:45but it wasn't actually named for a significant

36:49historic relevance about that person's,

36:53so I don't know if that makes any difference,

36:56but not.

36:58No, but Don brings up a good point.

37:00We should probably do some due diligence.

37:02And if it turns out that we can't find anything

37:05more about Margaret, or she was just happens to be

37:08the landowner at the time that the city annexed the land

37:12and put it on the road and they said,

37:14well, this was the Beaumont family farm

37:16and so we'll name this Beaumont Street

37:17and there was nothing more to it,

37:18then that will be part of the decision

37:20that this committee can make.

37:24We don't have to have, you know,

37:25we don't need to name everything

37:26and have an exhaustive reasoning why.

37:31It just, there needs to be like Don saying

37:33it just needs to be a little bit of due diligence

37:35just to see if there was any history behind there.

37:37And obviously we don't want to name a park

37:40maybe potentially after something,

37:43after someone who might have had a criminal background

37:45or maybe didn't do the right things all the time.

37:49So we should probably just do a little bit of background

37:52checking.

37:52And then on that note, should we also see

37:55why that street is called Sloan Street?

37:58The Sloan Hill is gonna be also,

38:03even though it's Sloan Hill,

38:04it's gonna be a bit farther away

38:05from maybe that street.

38:08And quite frankly, I'm glad that Don brought

38:12that one submission because I was quite taken aback

38:16by just the fact that it was, it's just whimsical, right?

38:19To have a park named after something

38:21that obviously it is a very small community around there

38:24and they obviously love that open space

38:27and they use it and they're building

38:29their own community around it.

38:30And it's just, it might be nice just to acknowledge

38:34the fact that people who have been living there

38:36for 30 or 40 years are using the space

38:39as their community and are enjoying it

38:42and that maybe that's just as simple as that, right?

38:44Yeah, there was even an attachment on that one

38:47that mentioned it showed a picture of it

38:49and it said in that as a little extra note

38:51was that there was a new, a new family that just didn't,

38:54that was also using the hill while that person

38:56was taking the screenshot and sticking it into the,

38:59that's right.

39:00So there's always, there's also new people

39:02that are taking advantage of the hill.

39:05And we'll just have to make sure that the park,

39:07parks department who are designing the park

39:09don't take the hill.

39:10Continue to take the hill as a feature.

39:12Don't take the hill out.

39:14I mean, it'll be hard for them to take the hill out

39:16but we don't want them to put the playground there

39:20and they can't use the hill, correct?

39:22So we'll have to, if that's the way the committee goes

39:25then we'll have to make sure that they design it accordingly.

39:29Okay.

39:30Do you have any preference, David or Megan?

39:37Like are you leaning towards one over the other?

39:40And then we get just more excited about Slum Hill

39:43with all this like neighborhood community feeling

39:46that people are bringing up.

39:47Yeah, it's kind of curious.

39:49I wouldn't mind hearing more about Mark and Paul

39:52and maybe it's all right with me.

39:59Okay, okay, okay.

40:01Oh, did they Slum Hill in the book?

40:03The one for you.

40:04Well, it just says WC Slum developed.

40:09Developed.

40:11I guess developed.

40:14Like they're like having to bring it up

40:16to the light and develop.

40:17Oh, really?

40:18Well, that'd be interesting.

40:24Well, I don't think Slum Hill is different enough

40:30from the street name to not have to worry about

40:32what that means or do we need to look into that too?

40:35I was gonna suggest that Darcy Hiltz

40:39at the Gulf Public Library Archivist

40:42would probably be able to tell us whether there's,

40:46I mean, they have like a genealogical archive there, right?

40:50And oftentimes I appeal to the library

40:54for help with things like this.

40:56Neither of those names surfaced in a significant way

40:58in the museum's archive.

41:00So we could check with the library

41:03and see if there's any sort of genealogical knowledge

41:06around those two family names.

41:09And then if there isn't,

41:10I think that's a pretty comprehensive archive there

41:13that, you know, I would imagine to our colleagues

41:18in heritage are probably the source of some

41:23of the information already that we know about

41:25in terms of like this was Beaumont property,

41:27this was Sloan property, et cetera.

41:29And there might be some archival material

41:32with heritage as well.

41:33So Steve or Jack in heritage, I think would be

41:37a great resource and then also Darcy

41:39at the Gulf Public Library.

41:42And then we know where we stand sort of historically, I think.

41:47Gulf Historical Society might have some material as well.

41:56So could we say we're leaning towards Sloan Hill,

42:00but if Margaret has like an epic story.

42:04Yeah.

42:04Yeah.

42:08Yeah.

42:13Not really a decision, but...

42:18Well, you know, you're coming back together

42:20to try to resolve court right.

42:23So this might be an opportunity to do a little bit more

42:27due diligence on Beaumont Park as well.

42:30But I'm hearing that there's two contenders.

42:33Yeah.

42:34Or one maybe leaning, you're leaning towards

42:37a bit stronger with it,

42:38but you wanna do a little bit of background on Beaumont.

42:45Don, not to put you on the spot,

42:47but are you able to assist with some of the genealogical stuff

42:51from the library?

42:53Yeah, I'm happy to reach out to Darcy.

42:55I have a relationship with him and I go to him all the time.

42:59So I think he won't be surprised,

43:01not that he would be anyway,

43:03but I'm happy to reach out there.

43:05And then are you,

43:08Rory going to chat with Heritage?

43:12Yeah, I can speak with Steve and Jack and Heritage

43:14and ask them if they have any background

43:16on either Sloan or Beaumont.

43:21And then maybe I would just ask one of the committee members

43:25in here maybe just to reach out to the Wells Historical Society

43:28to see if they could.

43:29They're pretty serious.

43:30Well, I didn't wanna put it on you, David,

43:34but I had to send an appointment before 13 years.

43:37Well, if you wouldn't mind that.

43:42And I don't think there's as much,

43:45I don't think we need as much info on Sloan,

43:50I don't think, like, maybe after a hill,

43:56other than...

43:59Potentially unless there's a person behind the name Sloan

44:01that you want to highlight.

44:03Or let me tell you.

44:05Right.

44:07Right.

44:08Let me realize.

44:14I just wanted to say one more comment was that

44:17it can Google Sloan Hill, sorry, Gualt,

44:20and it brings up a little drawing on the map of the hill,

44:23which is kind of cool.

44:24Oh, really?

44:25So it is actually called that in many,

44:28enough ways that it's gotten to Google.

44:41Well, the strength's down to that.

44:43Sorry, I'm wrong.

44:44The hill is coming towards it, Chris.

44:46I'm not saying no, it's not that.

44:52I have to turn to the drive by the hill.

45:02Okay, so I guess I'll ask for a motion to...

45:10You wanna tin you?

45:15Yes.

45:16Or we can ask for a motion to recommend to stop,

45:20to work with the SHIRH staff together, right?

45:24To have some background information on both suggestive names.

45:28Beautiful.

45:29Yeah, I like it.

45:30Yeah.

45:31And come back to this committee with...

45:32Yes, yes.

45:55And come back with the information

45:57we reported to the committee in the next meeting.

46:00Is it fair?

46:02Yeah, what I would like to suggest is that

46:06any information that I find,

46:09I will provide that information

46:10or anything that Dawn picks up,

46:12we can provide that to the committee

46:13so that you guys can prepare for your next meeting.

46:17That committee meeting.

46:17So you have it in hand, you can have some thoughts.

46:20Your notes have a debate and then make a decision.

46:23Again, I don't want to provide you information

46:25at a meeting and that you wanna take away again.

46:28So I will just, whenever I get the information,

46:35I'll pass it on to you guys.

46:38And anything, David, that you find too please,

46:40just don't hear anything.

46:43If you could check Roger Ruin's book,

46:46get a book about 1999 about where all the names

46:51are called streets, can you open that up?

46:55Yeah, Leo went to the library

46:57and it's a research.

47:04You need a motioner?

47:05Yes.

47:09I will move it like that.

47:11Okay.

47:13I'm happy with it for worse.

47:15Thank you very much.

47:22I'm three chairmen staff announcements.

47:27I don't have any announcements.

47:28I don't have any announcements.

47:37That's it?

47:38I'll stop having anything to say.

47:41Did you want to try to set in another meeting date?

47:46I know Megan, you're away for a little while.

47:51I'm back as of the 21st of April.

47:56So three weeks.

47:57Okay.

47:59Three weeks.

48:00So obviously you'll want some time on your return

48:04to gather your thoughts.

48:07Yeah, that's true.

48:08So we won't make it on the 28th.

48:10We're on the 22nd of the date you come back.

48:12Yeah, well, yeah, they come back that weekend, though.

48:15That's jet lag, but yeah.

48:16So we won't do that to you.

48:17So I'll...

48:22It's on my home country.

48:25My dad's from Taiwan.

48:26Oh, yeah.

48:29You know, seven.

48:33Yeah, that's fine.

48:37That's fine.

48:38It would be this time.

48:41It thinks...

48:42Whenever you want to set it.

48:44It's...

48:45Does that work for you?

48:46Five o'clock.

48:48Yeah, that works for me.

48:49Good for you, Megan.

48:54Okay, seven.

48:55So five o'clock.

48:56Okay, super.

48:57Five o'clock.

49:20Do we want to adjourn the meeting?

49:22Yes.

49:25I will move it.

49:26Okay, thank you.

49:27I'll move it.

49:28Okay, thank you.

49:33Fantastic.

49:35Thanks very much, Don, for your insight and your knowledge.

49:40Thanks for having me and for piping me in to the meeting.

49:43I appreciate that.

49:45Great.

49:47Have a great night.

49:49Bye.

49:54Thanks very much, everyone.

49:56I know we see people going around and around,

49:58but I think this is a great committee.
