Municipal Property and Building Commemorative Naming Committee

0:02We're going to reflect on our privilege to live and work in Guelph, a city built over rich indigenous histories.

0:08We are guests here and we should reflect upon the responsibility to care for this land, the people who live here today, and the generations to come.

0:16If our actions today can move us towards reconciliation, we should take pause and make those decisions with intention and gratitude.

0:23This place we call Guelph has served as traditional lands and a place of refuge for many peoples over time, but more specifically the Atawanderank and the Haudenosaunee.

0:36This land is held as the treaty lands and territory with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

0:42Guelph lies directly adjacent to the Haldeman tract and is part of a long established traditional hunting ground for the six nations of the Grand River.

0:50Many First Nations, Inuit and Nati peoples who have come from across Turtle Island call Guelph home today.

1:01I will move on to 1.2 disclosure of the cuneary interest in general nature.

1:07There are no approval of the minutes so that the May 7th, 2025 minutes be approved as presented.

1:33Moving on to item number 2, item for discussion.

1:40Court right east subdivision park naming.

1:44If it's okay, we will basically just say that the committee recommended to staff that the court right east subdivision park be called.

1:58And right down to Mekinak Dunjiba Park.

2:02And so Mekinak is Turtle and Dunjiba means sort of like where it lives.

2:08So it's translation would be where the turtles live.

2:13I'm going to put it in the chat to us so that Winnie can have the spelling that we had.

4:15You guys working on this and obviously the information that was provided to us by by Darren from the Mississauga's of the credit of the First Nations has obviously helped you guys hone in on on on the naming of this park, which is great.

4:33As you know, the Mississauga's and Darren are supportive of us moving ahead and recommending this name to council and he's also provided his support when this actually goes to council so that will be part of my report to council later this this year.

4:56And which I think is great. So I'll be able to write him into the report and and if there's any questions, obviously, I'm not sure if he'll be able to attend that council meeting or that committee meeting, but he's obviously given his support for the naming of all of this park.

5:16So that's great. What I will do is I will make sure that you are all aware of the timing of that report and that you are provided a copy of that report or you'll know when that report goes public.

5:31And I think right now, the way it's sort of working out is that it'll probably go sometime in October, I think, because council is not sitting in August.

5:51So by the time this report gets through the gauntlet of approval processes, it'll probably go in October, but I can confirm with this committee and make sure that you guys are aware of that when that goes.

6:07Parts from that what I'll probably do is I'll just follow up with Darren and make sure that he is aware of this committee's recommendation. And that'll be it. I think that's it. It's perfect.

6:37Appreciating that naming is into casual exercise that it takes a lot of labor and careful thought and intentionality and to engage community members in strategic ways so that we can advance the goals that we have as a committee.

6:53And so yeah, I'm just honored and thrilled to have been part of the process. So I appreciate that.

7:15Megan and Liam, I really appreciate the time that you guys have given over the last number of years to the naming committee. And yeah, I know it's been a ton of work to get us here.

7:28I know this one was very difficult to to work on. And I know there's been lots of back and forth. So I really appreciate your time and efforts.

7:36And yeah, this will be the last meeting of of the naming committee in its current form. And we will continue to work this year on a reformatting of the naming committee and hopefully you guys will will keep an eye on that as it sort of moves through the new process and gets more than likely goes through council to get approved and they'll probably be a new policy formed as well.

8:04Parks planning is actually taking on that task on the city's behalf. So hopefully there'll be a hopefully there'll be a public process for the the the naming of the new policy of it, the new naming policy.

8:22And hopefully you guys will be a part of that as well because I obviously you guys have some history on it and it would be great to get some feedback from you guys.
